A good way to see the quality of the construction in a house is to install a ceiling fan.

The electrical box in the ceiling in the basement, that already had a fan attached, was connected to the structure at a single point.
Here's hoping this new fan stays up as long as the old fan did.
Also, Hunter fans have wildly varying levels of installation directions. Two fans assumed the installer has installed dozens of fans. One assumed a homeowner putting up his/her first fan was doing the installing. Guess which directions were easier to follow and resulted in less cursing and frustration?
Also, LABEL THE FUCKING SCREWS AND BOLTS. How hard is it to give each type of connector its own bag and a freaking letter or number? I had 8 different types of screws and not a one was labelled and several were nearly indistinguishable from each other. I had to raid my screw drawer for leftovers from other projects to complete the install.
