I realized how to fix this the day after we ordered the 4ses.

If you go into the accessibility settings, you can put a home button on the screen and use that rather than the physical button. It took me about 15 minutes to teach myself to use the virtual button and I was pissed that we ordered the new phones primarily because of my home button failure.
