Opening sequence was great. Bardem was great. Beautifully shot. I thought it dragged a little in Act 3.
I didn't mind the complicated-ness of Bardem's plan. It works when you think of him like Norman Bates in Psycho. He wants his mother to understand her betrayal and repent before they die together. So he gives up her agents - her children - the way she gave up him. "Think on your sins"
I also didn't mind the subway sequence. Having just broken out of MI6, of course he's going to be followed. So of course he has a plan to get rid of whoever's following him. The rest is theatrics, but Bond villains are theatrical.
The part that worked less well for me was that Bond went from young rookie recruit who has to be hand-held by M to aged irrelevant dinosaur who should be put out to seed in the space of one movie.
The nostalgia bits like the DB5 were a lot of fun, but they also jarred a little with the dark tone of the film.
There's been talk about the ludicrousness of Silva's plan, but I think Bond's plan is worse. "Drive up to my childhood home alone without any weapons and kill everyone before they kill us" I'm sure MI6 could scramble a fighter jet or put a few snipers in the hills or something.
Also, shouldn't the gamekeeper who has looked after the property for 40 years be able to find his way around in the dark without a flashlight? Especially when everything should be well-lit by explosions and fire?
I liked Q, but it seems out of place for the guy who is in charge of cyber-security to still be handing out the guns.
I liked Moneypenny, but I feel it's about time for Bond to get to sleep with a Bond girl without her being killed in the next scene.
I'm very interested in seeing where they go forward from here. The last three Bonds have been about Bond proving himself + the mother-relationship with M. Nothing left to prove + new M means the next one cannot be about either.
