not to belittle him, but this seems very common with pilots.

kind of like ER docs, they're trained so hard that when something goes drastically wrong, they just take it in stride (the system works!).
the emergency (or at least extraordinary) commercial plane situations I've been in, the pilots all still had that lazy pilot drawl going whenever they talked to the cabin. (one was turning a trans-atlantic flight turning around and landing with a full fuel load, the other was one engine taken out by a bird on takeoff, both times).
