i buy mine 4 weeks out, but mine is probably cut more recently than one you would get.

also, when you get it home, cut at least 1 inch off the bottom with a saw because the stump will have sealed and not allow water in.
oh, and water. never let it go dry, ever.

more tips - put a big plastic sheet on the floor before you put your tree skirt down, it will protect your floor from spilled water and make it easy to get your tree out. when you are taking down the tree, lift it out of the stand and then pull the plastic up around it and tie it on. WAY less needles in your house as you remove it.
