The deal is that the first movie is sure to be slow, and the 2nd will take a massive detour into all out war.

It'll be hard to reconcile the two movies. Much more so as the narrative is likely to detour big time from the book. The 3rd movie puts us back in the book, but is also likely to be nothing like the 1st, with Mirkwood, the wood elves, the dragon, and the battle of the 5 armies.
