Palmeiro leads McGwire in WAR, hits (almost double McGwire's), batting average, RBI, Runs, etc...

What McGwire leads in is HRs and walks. OPS measures those two things to an absurd degree. Which is why is not the only measure of a hitter.
Then there's the eye test. Palmeiro was just a better all around player and hitter.
