the parallels with the Joker, specifically with Heath Ledger's Joker, jumped out at me right away. He's a villain that appears out of nowhere, with an army of strangely loyal minions, whose plan is to allow himself to be captured, in order to break out through a pointlessly elaborate plot, and whose ultimtae goal is to prove a point about a main antagonist.

(There's also the facial deformity, but that's a common villain thing)
