You need people to stay on and finish the liquidation. Without the bonuses execs will look for new jobs and abandon ship as soon as they get an opportunity.

So the danger is that someone else will have to come in and liquidate assets? Is that really so terrible?

The middle managers will either be part of those bonuses that got paid or they'll be gone.
