The middle managers will either be part of those bonuses that got paid or they'll be gone.

The cost of bringing in other consultants to come in and figure things out and complete the liquidation would likely be higher than paying the bonuses. Keep in mind that at this point the cash paid out comes out of the pockets of the creditors and the judge and the creditors have the right to oppose these payments. They likely did not oppose them. And if they did, they got paid because the judge found their argument about the cost not to be compelling (and his job is to try to preserve value for the creditors). I know it all sounds bad, but this is how it's always done for a reason.
