selfish.
You have literally 50,000 people left as far as you know. You're one of the most prominent leaders of your cause and you decided to sacrifice yourself for some misguided military principle?
Also, the woman you love, who is your political ally has escaped. She's going to need your help. You in fact are uniquely qualified to help if you can bring the military back in line but instead...you decide to do some BS last stand.
I firmly believed they wrote that whole episode with the end point in mind, thinking it would be so cool and what the wrote to get there didn't matter as much.
