I don't agree with that. A router will 'hide' your computer behind a NAT

but it doesn't really monitor incoming traffic.
Nor will it notify you if unsolicited activity is occurring.
Nor will it notify you if local programs have been changed (corrupted or replaced by a virus).
Nor does it monitor outgoing activity that can identify spyware/malware that has infiltrated your network.
Firewall are passive programs for the most part and have very small footprints. My philosophy is better safe than sorry.
