think of it more like, for three years of a child's life (and three years that he can remember, not the first three), his father was completely

un-trustworthy. failed to pick him after ball-practice. never showed up for the school play. wasn't around on weekends for family time. so for those three years the father-son bond just didn't grow at all, in fact, the child learned to not trust his father.,

well, sure, dad COULD all of sudden have an epiphany and want to be the best dad ever. and he could be, for years. but the relationship will never be what it could have been because those other emotions were there and colored everything that came later.
