he was running a 21st century ground mobilization against Clinton's 20th century model of anointment by the party apparatus
and against Romney taking that model to the next level to outperform what all conventional wisdom said should have been his absolute vote ceiling. he didn't bother trying to fight with Mitt over the middle, he just raised the ceiling by locating and turning out more of his base than anyone thought he could
