I can't tell you the number of times that I apologize to the people around me when my child cries or screams or otherwise makes a scene in public

(not so much any more, but he seemed to cry every time we were out a few months back). I'm overly apologetic. I feel bad that people might be annoyed by a fussy baby. Every time I apologize, I'm told some variation of "no worries, babies cry, he's fine".

I'm now convinced that every one of those people were lying or were just trying to make me feel better. Today was the first time I didn't apologize - and the first time I had people within earshot criticizing my mothering skills and my fussy kid.

grrrr.
