It looks like most (not all, but most) SYR-PHL flights on US are commuter flights that will arrive into F

And your flight out to Cali will definitely NOT depart from F, necessitating the bus connection.

There are spotty flights from SYR-PHL that use medium size jets and arrive at non-F gates but for the (random) date I chose, the 4:07pm was not one of those flights.
