i thought russell was fine. it would have been heresy for the superfans of the stage version, but i would have cut the hell out of the playlist

the songs clearly indicate how you should be feeling about the characters when they are singing. and half of the songs, i was. but half of the songs, i so was not. the Marius/Cosette stuff in particular. Jean Val Jean v. Javert and Fantine are pretty compelling.
but i would have picked the 10 or so best numbers and written dialogue for the scenes between.
