Yup. Our oldest "wanted" one for years, because some of the other kids had them from age 6+.

She didn't "need" it until she got to the point of us not knowing where she was 24 hours a day, which was when she started hanging out with friends who's mothers came to pick her up after school or something.
The younger one hangs out with more friends, so it was more of a necessity to know where she was.
