In response to "The Democrats passed it. Their rep on government spending is still safe." by tl

I *know* who passed it. That has nothing to do with the point I was making. Now I will explain it in simple terms for you.

1. Storm Sandy did a huge amount of damage on the east coast with a great deal of the damage being in New Jersey.

2. Chris Christie, the governor of New Jersey, was devastated about the physical damage to the land, the damage to homes and businesses and the damage to the infrastructure.

3. President Obama came to New Jersey the day after the storm to do a look see. He made a pledge to Governor Christie that he would see to it that New Jersey (and the other affected areas) would get all the government resources they needed to clean up, get the utilities back up and running, and rebuild the businesses and homes that were destroyed.

4. Governor Christie spontaneously shook President Obama's hand using the 2-handed grip and then bear hugged him. The cameras caught it and it went viral.

5. There were immediate rumblings from some republican members of congress who fancied themselves as members of the "Tea Party", aka "tea baggers". Some of the things said (on camera and in print) were: Christie was a traitor to his party; Christie had just ruined his career; Christie just wanted hand-outs and entitlements; the hug had removed Christie from getting party support if he decided to run for president, etc. It got ugly.

6. Chris Christie then made a speech wherein he blasted the members of his party saying the things in #5, above. To paraphrase, he said this wasn't a political issue but rather a human issue, he was impressed with President Obama's rapid response, and that anyone who didn't like it could go fuck themselves.

7. In a desperate move to prevent collateral damage, many of the old guard "real" republicans started to put distance between themselves and the upstart tea bagging republicans. This led to a total meltdown in the republic caucus last week culminating in the fiscal cliff bill voting.

8. Some members of congress felt that there was too much pork in the original Sandy bill and refused to vote until it was overhauled. In order to pay the claims due by the National Flood Insurance program, that part of the bill was peeled off and sent to congress on its own. The senate passed it easily. However 60 something republicans in the House decided to vote against it--even though the money had to be paid in order to cover legitamate claims.

9. Of the republicans who voted against the bill, the majority were tea baggers. Several of the congressmen who voted against funding the Flood insurance claims had formerly come begging for money (and they got it) when their districts were hit by national disasters. Hence the irony and my desire to hear what Governor Christie has to say about it.

10. You really need to figure out what is going on in a conversation before you post some hit and run comment that leaves no doubt you are only about 10% as well informed as you pretend to be. I KNOW 100% of the democrats voted for the bill. Also, there was nothing "hypocritical" about it--the bill was merely to release funding for a federal program hit with too many claims in a short period of time. It would have meant declaring the National Flood Insurance program insolvent and that would have been "illegal". Please do just a tiny bit of research before posting your bullshit nonsense. You know how you get into an extraordinary amount of arguments here on this board? This is the reason. It has nothing to do with personalities or popularity, but when you post idiotic comments that have nothing to do with the conversation and are completely wrong, surely you can't expect people to not call you on it, like I just did. End of discussion.
