If there hadn't been demonstrations you'd have a point about "harping". There were demonstrations, just not at the consulate preceding the attack.

So the President should have been out there taking the protesters to task.
And it may very well have looked like protests were part and parcel of the attack on the consulate due to the protests in other areas at the same time.
Is it important to be right eventually about what led to this attack? Yes. Is whether protests played into the attack all that important in determining responses and assigning blame? Not in my opinion. At the end of the day, motivation for the attack is almost irrelevant.
