I agree they should have had more of a wait and see attitude, but the part I still find silly about all of this is that from my recollection of the

ultimate report, there still is not a huge discrepancy between what actually happened and what was reported. I don't have time to search out the report, but it is not the case that it was a quiet street and al queda began an organized, planned assault in the dead of night. There was a protest of some sort that had begun (though not based on that movie) and in the midst of the milling about and protests, al queda took advantage to launch an assault. It wasn't mob spill over from the protest. It was pre-meditated in the sense that there was an intent to do what they did. But it's not hard to see how there was initial confusion, particularly given the protests at the same time in Egypt, as to what was happening. And in the end I agree with Hillary that whether they were right or wrong in the first few days is irrelevant as a practical matter, but should inform how they behave in the future. If this was really about what matters rather than politics we would not have the uproar from the right that we have.
