I fired off an email on the USPS support page, not expecting a response, but actually got a call less than 12 hours later from the local post office where a guy spent a good couple of minutes explaining the sitch: I guess one (cheaper) shipping option companies sometimes use is to have UPS ship stuff up to WA where it then gets on a BOAT and then sails the rest of the way to AK. So, an extra couple weeks before I see it, but glad to hear it's on its way. And kudos to the USPS.
