there was a tight window of about 10 years ago, A Goldilocks of Person to Person communication where you had a single phone (land line) and a single email (that people checked religiously). Cell phones probably overlap in that timeframe but you get my point.
Before that, as you say...you had a phone which at best you reached the person or left a passive message for them to respond to.
Now, however, you have multiple communication tracts. A text usually works but requires someone to be near their phone (ditto a VM). If you want to email someone you'd better know out of the 3 they have which is the one they check most. If you try FB you need to know their FB patterns...my sister never checks FB for example. If you could go Inactive on FB she would.
Right now there are a variety of methods to get in touch with someone. I am fascinated to see if that continues or if some of these methods die or converge.
