Excel help! This one I think is tricky

I am trying identify/find a series of numbers from a cell that has more information than just that set of numbers.

for instance

VARIOUS BUS CHECKS 0003-0000-S808321

So I want to be able to find, just 0003-0000

essentially trying to extract codes from a long mess of description.

can this work? That is to say can excel do a substring search? or will it only work on exact matches?

can you data -- > text to columns --> examine the column withe numbers you want? that's the quickest way, I would think. -- nm - amanda Jan 25, 12:59
