There's a few good strategy sites out there, though Magic finance is also a very deep rabbit hole.

The main site for the game, www.dailymtg.com has articles every day of the week, which vary on topic from game design, tournament news, tournament results, casual discussion, limited discussion. There's not really an "I'm new at this" article but a few of the columns could be helpful.
The most popular strategy site is Star City Games (www.starcitygames.com) though the better articles from the more successful are hidden behind a paywall. If he's new to the game, I wouldn't recommend getting a subscription just yet, as some of the writers go into really deep game theory type stuff. The free articles vary wildly in quality (and topic) but there's some okay writers there.
There are also articles at tcgplayer.com and channelfireball.com, which do not have paywalls and each has strong well-known players writing for them.
The above sites (except Daily MTG) also double as store fronts. From there, you can get an idea of the value of certain cards. Easiest thing to do is just type the card's name into the search function and the prices will come up. Star City tends to be slightly more expensive than the others but that's virtue of them being bigger (and they are actually awesome customer service-wise in my experience), but between SCG and TCGplayer you can get a general value of what something will trade for.
As for buying and selling, like I said, that's a field that a few people sort of make a living on and it can be somewhat cutthroat (and/or very expensive). Ebay is the main source of course, but there's a couple of forums out there where trading and selling take place. I'd stick to local trading for now.
How long has he been playing? Is there a local card shop that hosts a Friday Night Magic? That's the best way to start. And actually, this past weekend would have been a great time to go as it was the Gatecrash pre-release, which was the very first time anyone got to play with the new set that's coming out on Friday. They're very new player friendly.
Happy to answer any other questions :)
