I do it sometimes for restaurants, and always for hair salons and the like.

for sure for big events - work gatherings, that kind of thing - I always give cash individually to helpful staff and servers on top of whatever's on the card. I appreciate the back of the house folks deserve something, but I want to make sure those that are good actually get more.
