It's no magic bullet, but that's no excuse not to do it either. (It's hard to see how the parties can be reformed from the inside)

British political parties are probably more flexible - Labor moved to the center in the 1990s with Tony Blair, and then Cameron reformed the image of the Conservatives in the mid-2000s. But these changes were driven by years, even decades, of electoral defeat and a strong leader who was able to sell a path to victory.
Neither factor really exists in America - it's rare for a party to be shut entirely out of the Reps, Senate and the Presidency. And the parties don't have a single leader they are all forced to rally round.
