UV is a multi-vendor service to provide digital movies. Vudu is one of the UV compatible services so they can get access to your UV "locker"

This is why ML is always twitchy about Amazon being a UV partner. If that happened then you could stream all your UV movies via Amazon's Instant

I think that's exactly the model they want. People have access to the content but they cannot buy it permanently in a standard format.
