The two are not only not mutually exclusive, they're pretty much the same thing. Yes, they're still pretty close to being the same species (at

least some mixed offspring will still be fertile, right?), but I'm thinking it still serves as an example of evolutionary processes.

Wikipedia on dogs and wolves: "Although DNA testing suggests an evolutionary split between dogs and wolves around 100,000 years ago, no fossil specimens prior to 33,000 years ago are clearly morphologically domesticated dog."
