It's a mix between the types of trees in the forest (eucalypts tend to explode) and the unpredictable weather

In the 'right' conditions, these fires can move at incredible speeds - 50km in 30 min was one figure I read. The residents of one town thought that the fire was going to pass them by, and then the wind changed and the fire passed right over them.
