Reagen, on the Senate... What's often forgotten is that Harper went three whole years (Jan 06-Jan 09) without appointing any new senators save for...

...The elected Bert Brown. He wanted to reform the Senate prior to appointing any new ones. When the opposition refused to play ball - there's an argument to suggest they couldn't even if they wanted to* - Harper got forced to appoint new senators in 2009 when numbers had fallen quite substantially and they were having trouble on quorum. Harper, being Harper, took offence and decided to appoint pit balls and gimmicks in that class. Hence you appoint Duffy as a PEI senator. Or Brazeau as an aboriginal from Quebec.

But Harper's appointed over 50 senators since Jan 2009. It's safe to say most aren't of the Duffy/Brazeau type. (Mostly because they've gotten a lot smarter since then.)
