But they have to offer something appealing. A "catch" or "hook". I can see HSX being an entertainment-based social network.

But for that to succeed, they need - *GASP* - a redesign.
If, for instance, Facebook were launched today with all its features and options, it would overwhelm any potential new user and drive him away. Similarly for MySpace. People use these sites now because their friends do. People used those sites in the early days because they were easy to use and offered something.
