They've won the popular vote one out of the last six elections. Those ideas are clearly unpopular, at least for POTUS. -- nm

The ideas have gone *much* further right (it's a race to the right, in fact) while the electorate has stayed largely in the middle.

The GOP needs to figure out a way to get throught he primaries without painting themselves into a corner policywise. See Mitt Romney.

I would say that they have swung rightward, and the electorate has swung leftward relative to that.
