I tried birchbox before I found out they'd done a shady thing* with YTers and bloggers, but gave it up after several months of getting lesser boxes than others did (if I can get better samples from sephora, etc., for free, why pay?) and things that just didn't fit my profile (ex: chartreuse nail polish /= classic style there), plus poor customer service when there were issues with items/billing.
I caved and re-started when I saw the January box was going to be a tie-in with the manrepeller site and had good brands -- I am still waiting for that box! I tracked it and they somehow messed-up sending to either my home or work address, so they're re-sending; and who knows what leftovers I'll get. they didn't offer anything for my troubles, so boo.
I am on my 5th or 6th glossybox; and they've been better, but still not really worth the cost. they regularly toss in bonus "lifestyle" items like luna bars that have more value than many of the samples, but I can buy those myself for $1.
so for both birch and glossy, if I think about the total I've paid out... well, I could have had at multiple splurge items from sephora or nordstrom.
I want to try ipsy, but I fear I am the chiller for good boxes. ;) -
*the birchbox shady thing was that they sent full-size items to YTers and bloggers, so they'd rave about how great the service was... only their actual subscriptions are for sample-sizes almost always.
