fwiw, it was from a radio show and they tried it, then many listeners did and reported back.

it seems it's not universal; but it does work quite often, esp. in more modern elevators.
a quick skim of other sites about it shows a lot of comments from people saying it has/hasn't worked for them, so that confirms the non-universality; but worth a shot if in a situation that it may help!
