(It's an interesting read with a lot of insights into diplomacy and how it works, but holy 11 pages!)

My main criticism of the article is that it ignores the question of whether diplomacy would have been successful where military action was not.

How would diplomacy have fixed the problems with Afghanistan and Pakistan? Pakistan would still have the least effective government of any important country in the world and generals who want to maintain a privileged position. Afghanistan would still be a collection of competing tribes who believe more in looking after their own than building a country. A power-sharing deal with the Taliban? How would that work in practice? Etc etc...
