I think you can say that Romney did learn from McCain's campaign - like carefully vetting his VP candidates - but that's like fighting the last battle

instead of the current one. Also, I think McCain's loss was dismissed as inevitable - after eight years of Bush, with two wars and a financial crisis everyone was on board for change.
But yeah, it's the party that's the problem and they don't look like sorting out their issues any time soon.
The lessons I would hope any Republican candidate would draw from Romney's campaign are:
Take responsibility for your own image, and don't allow your opponents (whether Republican or Democrat) to define you.
To sell your candidacy to a majority of voters, you actually have to provide policies that appeal to a majority, not just do a better sales job.
Even if the media actually is against you, they are probably more grounded in reality than your own people - so pay attention to what they say, whether it's commentary or polls.
