I'll give Probst maybe more credit than he deserves here.

I think he bought in to Brandon's "redeem the Hantz name" thing, and his struggle with it. And thought that said struggle would make good tv, and a potential great guy to root for. Which it would if Brandon wasn't so obviously damaged and possibly a really bad guy.
But he deserves plenty of flak for his Russell love. As does whoever administered the psych eval(s) that Brandon passed.
