The definition of the character was such that he had always been a ticking time bomb. The boss had a soft spot for him and that protection allowed him to survive longer than he should have. Once it was gone, his true colors were revealed.

The most remarkable aspect of the story is that he was a victim as much as if not more than anyone else.
