I've never seen a candidate have to fight so hard to maintain his base and have so little time to pivot to the center.

they usually get to do that once the nomination is locked up but Mitt had a mere few weeks. It's not always wrong to have a long healthy primary contest but when it requires your presumptive front runner to continue to have to feed the base a steady diet of red meat...that's not good.
That's what this guy is trying to say without saying it.
