I don't agree with the IM very much. It wasn't that there were too many debates. it was that there were too many fringe voters.

when your primary voting demographic is in a race to the right...you are going to have candidates race to the righ to get them.
There was one craven guy who had to be President (Mitt) and then half a dozen people who were all in a race to go farther to the right to appeal to the primary voters.
Until you can find a way to bring your party voting center more into alignment with something approaching reality, you're going to have this race to the right. It doesn't matter if there's 10 debates, 20 debates or 30 debates.
crazy voters beget crazy ambitious candidates.
