as I understand it, putting the scorpions in their mouth for a moment served 2 purposes ....
1, apparently it had some sort of tranquil effect on the scorpions to where they would not as likely sting or pinch someone....
2 ... apparently, there's a folklorish / mythological attachment (for lack of better wordings) to what they were doing. at least one of the bushmen was "cleaning" the scorpion with his mouth. and you'll recall that there were several references to the scorpions being the bushmens' friend. I'd have to read up on it or something to get the details right, but there's a significance to "cleaning" the scorpion friends "so that they don't hurt us" sort of thing going on ...
