You are assuming that people only engage in defining rights of groups they are members of. That's not what history tells us.

As far as percent of population, that's hard to say due to cloesting, but admitted LBTQ populations range from 3%-10% by state (DC highest) with the average probably around 3% per a recent poll.

Also, per a recent poll, 58% of Americans support same sex marriage, so the majority of Americans, gay, straight, or otherwise, are in support.
