I wouldn't ask anything client specific. I would wait for a lull between clients or some down time and just ask when commission starts kicking in.

If you ask when it's obviously client specific you'll likely get some conflict but if you ask in a way as to suggest you're interested in your career that may be more effective. It's a tricky thing to do...be assertive while not laying waste to a work environment.
