I don't know if it's still the case now, but when my dad worked for IBM, if you came up with a patentable idea in their employment, they owned it.

I got the impression when he told me this a while ago that even if you had developed the idea in your garage, if it was in their wheelhouse and you were on their payroll, it still belonged to them.
