Joke if you will, but I've been advocating this for a while.

The state's only involvement in relation to marriage should pertain to contractual obligations. Insurance, taxes, child support, mortgage, etc. Who's boning whom? None of the state's business. Once that's accepted, marriage will be less about genders and more about room mates and how finances are handled.
