Zork is right. This is like insurance. You pay for the coverage. There are costs to the company to maintain the service. They need to keep your

info, keep enough people to handle whatever calls are required, maintain equipment, etc. Now they may overcharge for this, but just paying if you need to use it doesn't really compensate them (at least profitably), unless the charge itself is exorbitant (not only to cover the costs involved but the lost stream of revenue that they would have had had you subscribed).
