Revolution ...wtf question?

so, I turned the DVR on right at the point at the start when the chopper shoots at them with the mini-gun, they run into the diner and within 3 seconds, a series of missiles blow up the diner.

how the hell did they survive? and better yet, why didn't the chopper pilot hover like those damn things can to enable the shooter to ya know, aim instead of strafe?
