I think there's an argument to be made that it's counter productive.


I'm thinking more of the turn-your-lights-out-for-an-hour thing from last week, but the avatar thing could be in the same category of doing something really easy and somewhat public in the name of 'awareness' or 'support', but with no tangible effect.

Then, when a hypothetical situation arises when you might be prompted to actually give some money or time to tangibly support the cause, you're already feeling accomplished from flicking your lights off or clicking your mouse, and then take no real action.

Just a thought.
