Our marketing department wanted to get rid of the www because it now feels a bit outdated and unnecessary but, because our university website was built in the days when each specific school, program, or specific page needed www, if we don't have www we can't track the click -thru rate to the specific sites a person goes to. Not having www counts the clicks as if they just went to the main homepage, so without the www we have no way of tracking popular sites, programs, details or user rates. To set it up so we don't have to use www would require a web person to go into the 20,000 individual pages and make a redirect to the new name without www. We ain't doin' that. So we continue with www.
I'd suggest you check with your web folks before making your design decision.
this is true, right? and how outdated would a site have to be that this is an issue?
